The City of Dunkirk Youth & Recreation Department provides recreational, educational, and cultural activities for the adults and youth.  On this page, you will find information on what we do, including Camp Gross, the City Recreation Center, Adult Recreation Leagues and Youth activities.

2022 Summer Better Than Others Day Camp - Registration

The City of Dunkirk Youth Bureau and Recreation Office will be accepting registration for the “Summer Better Than Others Day Camp” for youth beginning at 5 years old and who have graduated from kindergarten through 11 years old. The camp offers recreational, athletic and educational experiences for youngsters. Located in the beautiful confines of Camp Gross in Cassadaga, this summer recreational day camp features daily activities such as arts & crafts, games, lifeguard supervised fishing and swimming, theatre and much more. The maximum youth to staff ratio is 6:1 with the ratio being significantly lower for waterfront activities.

Children will be picked up and dropped off at five (5) designated locations in Dunkirk every morning and afternoon. Two staff counselors will be on the bus daily and will be taking an attendance check at each stop. Bus locations will be made available upon registration. Lunches will be provided by the Summer Feeding Program. The cost for one week of camp for City of Dunkirk residents is $40.00 per child with every additional child in the family at $30.00 per child. For children living outside the City of Dunkirk, fees will be $50.00 per child and $35.00 for each additional child. For Jr. Counselors – ages 12-15 yrs. the cost will be FREE. Parents may sign children up for a maximum of 2 weeks.

Registration: Beginning Monday, June 6th through June 10th registration will be accepted for City of Dunkirk residents at the Dunkirk Youth Bureau/Recreation Office (Located at the City Hall - Stearns Building – 1st Floor, 338 Central Avenue, Dunkirk, NY) from 1:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. Mondays through Fridays. Starting Monday, June 13th, non-City residents may register for camp at the Dunkirk Youth Bureau/Recreation Office from 1:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.
Parents may sign children up for a maximum of 2 weeks. Please contact Patty in the Recreation Office at 366-9885 with any questions. NO mail-in registrations will be accepted.


2021 Summer Better Than Others Day Camp


The City of Dunkirk Youth and Recreation Department is proud to announce the completion of another successful year of our Summer Better Than Others Day Camp at Camp Gross!

During the five weeks of camp, close to 300 kids attended and experienced the joy of nature, arts and crafts, swimming, fishing, athletics, new friendships, and can’t wait to return next year!

A special thank you to the Camp Gross Foundation, New York State Division for Youth, Chautauqua County Department of Health and Human Services -Youth Bureau and all those who supported the camp.

Also, we would like to thank all of our wonderful staff & counselors who helped make our 2021 camp season so enjoyable for the kids!
