Mayor Wdowiasz proclaims, Friday, May 24th, 2024, as National Poppy Day

Mayor Wdowiasz proclaims, today, Friday, May 24th, 2024, as National Poppy Day. The red poppy became a powerful symbol of remembrance and started with a poem written by a World War I brigade surgeon who was struck by the sights of the red flower growing on a ravaged battlefield. The Dunkirk American Legion Auxiliary Unit #62 has pledged to remind Americans each year that the men and women who have served and died for their country deserve to be remembered. Members of the American Legion Post 62 Family will have poppies available to purchase at Tops Markets on May 23 - 26, 2024 and citizens are encouraged to donate to this most worthy cause and to wear a poppy to honor and remember the sacrifices made by our veterans while protecting our freedoms. all donations received will be used by the American Legion organization for their programs that support veterans, the military community and their families.
