Breaking Ground on Farmers Market Pavilion

City of Dunkirk, Mayor Rosas, Director of Development, Vince DeJoy and KIRST Construction, all proudly took part in the groundbreaking ceremony for the new Farmers’ Market Agrarian Pavilion located along the parking area of the Dunkirk Senior Center at 45 Cliffstar Court. The new pavilion structure is made possible through the efforts of the City of Dunkirk Development Department securing the recently awarded NYS Farmers’ Market Resiliency Grant. The agrarian pavilion which was designed by Building & Zoning Project Manager, Glenn Christner, will run along Ruggles Street and Wright Street forming a “L” style pattern, which aligns with the market’s goal of increasing diversity, inclusiveness, accessibility, and profitability to local farmers. The present market location is walkable to surrounding neighborhoods, and the addition of an agrarian pavilion will provide a more community-like setting that will help define and enhance placemaking initiatives by the City, as well as to expand efforts to provide local grown food access for Dunkirk's underserved communities and for transportation challenged seniors and residents.
Additionally, the added structure will allow for protection from weather and give better access to market vendors to pull up their vehicles and unload fresh product for public purchase. Other planned improvements will include an addition of new sidewalk for safe and easy walkability to the market’s local customers that include many seniors. The official ground breaking was held on Wednesday, August 16th, 2023 at 10 AM EST to kick of the exciting expansion of the fresh farm produce market available to the surrounding area neighborhood.

The public is encouraged to come out and shop the market which is open on Wednesdays 9AM to 2PM and runs from June 14th through October 11th annually. Featured at the market are great fresh veggies, artisan vendor crafts and occasional special offer opportunities like the Field & Fork Double Up Program (for SNAP users) & occasional senior coupons.
The Dunkirk Farmers’ Market accepts cash, EBT/SNAP benefits, WIC and Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program benefits, and WIC VF checks and FreshConnect app ability.
Mayor Rosas and The City of Dunkirk happily support local area farmers and the Farmers’ Market which promotes healthy eating and brings in more business that local residents can utilize for farm to table nutrition!
