Freedom of Information Law (FOIL)
The Freedom of Information Law ("FOIL") is a law designed to ensure public access to government records. FOIL is set forth in Article 6 of the Public Officers Law (§§84-90)13. Under FOIL, an agency must make records available for public inspection and copying, except to the extent that records or portions thereof fall within one or more grounds for denial.

Freedom of Information Act (FOIA)
The Freedom of Information Act ("FOIA") applies only to federal agencies and does not create a right of access to records held by Congress, the courts, or by state or local government agencies. Each state has it's own public access laws that should be consulted for access to state and local records.
