High Technology Incubator

High Technology Incubator Commercial Waterfront District
SUNY Fredonia is proposing the development of a "High Technology" Incubator to be located one-mile from campus in the City of Dunkirk. The proposed incubator will be located on a 20,000 sq. ft. vacant piece of property in the central area of Dunkirk's core revitalization area, its commercial waterfront district. The proposed site will include a two-story 24,000 sq. ft. high technology building will focus on computer science and media arts, but also include technology focused applications from business, communication, and the natural sciences. It will assist in creating jobs in a high unemployment area and become an economic development catalyst for the entire Western NY region.

The incubator will support the development of high tech start-up companies with the intent to provide opportunities for SUNY Fredonia graduates and others to stay in the area and create economic opportunities for themselves and others in Western New York. Computer Science, Media Arts, Communication, Business and Natural Science graduates, along with community entrepreneurs, would find a high technology incubator an enhancement for locating within Chautauqua County.

Fredonia's multi-faceted Computer Science Department offers options in Computer Theory, Information Systems, Systems Software, and Computer Applications. The Information Systems track is geared to commercial computer information management and administrative applications. The Systems Software track prepares graduates for systems level programming, design and networking. The Computer Applications track emphasizes computer applications with interdisciplinary opportunities in applied mathematics or geographic information systems.

SUNY Fredonia's unique Media Arts program combines arts programs and computer technology. The Media Arts program provides a comprehensive foundation of design skills with an emphasis on interactive design, conceptual thinking, and the ability to create multimedia content using artistic sensibilities. Graduates of Media Arts enter fields including multimedia advertising and marketing, public relations, arts administration, multimedia design and production, imaging technologies in the visual arts, digital photography, corporate communications, animation, and motion graphics.

Many students in computer science and media arts are forced to leave NYS with the skills they have learned at SUNY and get jobs elsewhere. The High Tech Incubator will provide for an innovative solution to help retain and expand existing and new high tech companies in Western New York.

SUNY Fredonia's Center for Rural Regional Development & Governance in partnership with the City of Dunkirk, the Dunkirk-Sheridan Empire Zone, the Dunkirk Local Development Corporation and other public-private organizations will provide the oversight for the proposed facility and for making connections with the existing business community.
